Celebrating the Meaning of Independence Day

"The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America.  I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival.  It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty.  It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more."

-- Letter from John Adams after signing the Declaration of Independence to his wife Abigail (side note -- getting approval for the document took two days, thus July 4th became the officially celebrated date.  A bit of red tape even in the early days!)

I admit it, I'm an American history geek who gets a bit reflective at times, so bear with me.  I hope you have a celebratory 4th of July as John Adams predicted 200+ years ago.  I also hope you take a few moments to reflect on the incalculable freedom that we are given as Americans as a direct result of the bold action taken by our founders.  Declaring independence was seen as risky, bold, and unwise by so many at that time, but we had smart, courageous, and diverse leaders who were unified in mission to lay the groundwork for our great nation.  As we celebrate and count our blessings, I want to acknowledge that while we will always have room for improvement and areas of concern, we still live in the greatest land of opportunity unlike any other on the planet.

Before you "like or unlike" this email, I want to advocate turning off your favorite news source and picking up a book--a quick read from my favorite author and historian David McCullough, who just released The American Spirit: Who We Are and What We Stand For.  McCullough helps put things in perspective, both the triumphs and tragedies we have experienced throughout our nation's history.  In our world of wealth management, we talk a lot about risk and reward.  Reading about those who paved the way before us gives us a whole new appreciation and viewpoint on risk and reward.  This perspective can and will be invaluable as we navigate current and future challenges.

Thanks for letting me share my thoughts and choosing to trust us as your independent wealth management team.

Have a safe and enjoyable 4th of July with plenty of "pomp and parade"!
